Debra Cowan will be
October 12 Song & Story Swap
guest
Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the October
Pioneer Valley Folklore
Society SONG & STORY SWAP.
Friday, October 12,
7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Black Sheep Café, 79 Main
St., Amherst, Mass.
Appearing
as guest performer will be folksinger Debra Cowan. Trained as a classical
musician, Debra changed directions in the eighties and began focusing on
the interpretation of old songs and ballads. Her talent as a
vocalist has made her a popular performer at festivals, coffeehouses and
folk radio shows in both the U.S. and U.K. Debra's sixth album, The
Long Grey Line, was released this past year.
Find out more about Debra Cowan at her
web site, http://www.debracowan.com.
Click
on the speaker to hear Debra sing "Bullgine Run" from her Banks
of Green Willow album (requires RealAudio).
The Song & Story Swap is an event where people of all ages gather to share stories and songs that may be
traditional, newly written, or of personal experiences. You can tell,
sing, or lead everyone in singing, play an instrument or request a song or
story. Listeners are welcome, too. Admission is free, with
donations accepted.
The warm-up theme this month is Transitions.
The PVFS Song & Story Swap happens the 2ND FRIDAY of
every month. For information contact Paul Kaplan, (413)-253-9484 or
Jeff Lee, (413)-256-0433 or visit http://www.filbert.com/pvfs.
Steve Gillette &
Cindy Mangsen will perform in Amherst on Oct. 19
Coming
to the Black Sheep on Friday, October 19 will be the popular folk duo of
Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen. Steve Gillette is considered to
be one of folk music's premier songwriters, his compositions having been
recorded by dozens of major artists, including Garth Brooks, John Denver,
Linda Ronstadt, Waylon Jennings, Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, Kenny
Rogers, and Tammy Wynette. Steve's harmonies and stellar guitar
playing highlight the crystalline soprano voice of Cindy Mangsen.
Their performances resonate with warmth and intelligence, prompting
England's Folk Roots Magazine to comment, "still just about
the classiest duo around."
The show takes place at the Black Sheep
Café, 79 Main St., Amherst, Mass.
and begins at 8:00 p.m. Admission is $8. For info call,
(413)-256-0433.

Mangsen's web site at http://www.sover.net/~gillette/.

Lou Wigdor, reviewer
at large
We are pleased to announce the addition
of a new section to the PVFS web site which will contain the collected
music articles and reviews of Lou Wigdor. A professional journalist
and longtime music collector, Lou's musical analyses dig deep and can be
counted on to turn up interesting and sophisticated insights.
Lou's first piece is not folk-related --
he reviews a September concert by the Dave Holland Quintet, a jazz
ensemble, at the Iron Horse -- but he plans future coverage of folk and
world music events. You'll find it at http://www.filbert.com/pvfs/LousReviews.
