Rona Leventhal will be
February Song & Story Swap guest
Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the February
Pioneer Valley Folklore
Society SONG & STORY SWAP.
Friday, February
8,
7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Black Sheep Café, 79 Main
St., Amherst, Mass.
Guest performer at the February 8 Song & Story
Swap will be storyteller Rona Leventhal.
A movement and drama
specialist, Rona Leventhal offers tales from many cultures and traditions,
weaving together humor, singing, mime, a variety of accents, and
audience participation. In addition to performing, Rona teaches
and leads workshops on the art of storytelling and is co-author of the
popular storytelling sourcebook, Spinning Tales, Weaving Hope.
Visit her web site at http://www.ronatales.com/
to learn more about Rona Leventhal.
The Song & Story Swap is an event where people of all ages gather to share stories and songs that may be
traditional, newly written, or of personal experiences. You can tell,
sing, or lead everyone in singing, play an instrument or request a song or
story. Listeners are welcome, too. Admission is free, with
donations accepted.
The warm-up theme this month is Survival.
The PVFS Song & Story Swap happens the 2ND FRIDAY of
every month. For information contact Paul Kaplan, (413)-253-9484 or
Jeff Lee, (413)-256-0433 or visit http://www.filbert.com/pvfs.
New Edition of Spinning Tales,
Weaving Hope released
While
we're on the subject of Rona Leventhal, let us announce that the
much-loved storytelling resource book, Spinning Tales, Weaving Hope:
Stories, Storytelling and Activities for Peace, Justice and the
Environment, has just been released in a second edition by New Society
Publishers. Rona is a co-editor of the work, along with
Massachusetts storytellers, John Porcino, Jay Goldspinner, Katie Green and
Ed Brody.
For information on how to order the book,
see http://www.newsociety.com/stwhfs.html.
Wendell Full Moon Coffeehouse
Each
month on the Saturday closest to the full moon, Wendell, Mass. hosts the Full
Moon Coffeehouse. The event begins with an open mic at 7:30,
followed by a folk or jazz main bill. It is set in the quaint and
historic Wendell Town Hall, reportedly the longest running non-profit
venue in New England.
Among the performers booked for 2002 are
Cindy Kallet (2/23), Gideon Freudmann & Mark Hirschler (3/23), and
Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem (4/20).
For the current Full Moon Coffehouse
schedule as well as links to more than thirty other area music
calendars, see our Pioneer
Valley Entertainment Guides page.
Lou's Reviews --
Buddy & Julie
Miller's song Rachel
Last
month Lou Wigdor revealed his picks for the 10
best non-classical albums of 2001. At the same time he announced
his choice for best song/performance
of the year, Buddy & Julie Miller's heartfelt and soaring tribute
to a victim of the Columbine High School tragedy entitled Rachel.
Lou spoke with Buddy and Julie during a
brief pause in their touring schedule, and delved into the process that
generated the musical gem. Read his commentary, Musician's
in Rachel's Grace.
