Terry Kitchen to sing
at April 12 Song & Story Swap
Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the April
Pioneer Valley Folklore
Society SONG & STORY SWAP.
Friday, April
12,
7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Black Sheep Café, 79 Main
St., Amherst, Mass.
Appearing as guest will be Boston-area singer and
songwriter, Terry Kitchen.
A lyrical storyteller as much as a folksinger,
Kitchen's compositions have won a number of songwriting awards, including
top prizes at the 2000 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest and the 2000 USA
Songwriting Competition. He has recorded six solo albums and frequently
appears in coffeehouses and folk festivals throughout the Northeast.
Remarks "Victory Review" writer Richard
Middleton, "Terry Kitchen’s songs are portraits of ordinary people
and emotions, captured with extraordinary compassion, honesty and humor. A
talented writer."
The Song & Story Swap is an event where people of all ages gather to share stories and songs that may be
traditional, newly written, or of personal experiences. You can tell,
sing, or lead everyone in singing, play an instrument or request a song or
story. Listeners are welcome, too. Admission is free, with
donations accepted.
The warm-up theme this month is Food.
The PVFS Song & Story Swap happens the 2ND FRIDAY of
every month. For information contact Paul Kaplan, (413)-253-9484 or
Jeff Lee, (413)-256-0433 or visit http://www.filbert.com/pvfs.
Lou & Peter
Berryman return to Amherst on May 12
Mark
your calendars for the return of the Wisconsin duo, Lou & Peter
Berryman, May 12 at the Black Sheep Café in Amherst.
Classifying this wildly creative and
entertaining pair is nearly impossible. Their clever original songs
derive humor and poignancy from the ultra-mundane; Orange Cocoa
Cake re-enacts the recitation of a recipe over the phone while
watching the kids; Your State's Name Here offers a generic
state anthem; When Did We Have Sauerkraut? portrays cleaning
out the refrigerator while reminiscing about the Vietnam War. Need
we say more?
The show will take place Sunday, May 12,
7:00 p.m. at the Black Sheep Café, 79 Main St., Amherst, Mass.
Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at For
the Record,
194 N. Pleasant St., Amherst or by contacting Jeff Lee at (413)-256-0433.
Club 47 and the Early
Cambridge Folk Scene
Club
47 on Mt. Auburn St. was the epicenter of the late fifties-early sixties
folk scene in Cambridge, from whence a national folk revival
sprouted. As a teenage dishwasher and busboy, Ed Smith caught many
of the club's headliners such as Joan Baez, Mimi Farina and the Jim
Kweskin Jug Band, as well as several artists with Pioneer Valley
connections.
Read Ed's recollection of the times, Club
47 and the Early Cambridge Folk Scene.
Pete Seeger in Holyoke
On
May 1, renowned singer, songwriter, & storyteller Pete Seeger and his
grandson Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, will join the Springfield Community Chorus
and other local performers for the Western Mass. Jobs with Justice May Day
Celebration.
The event takes place at 7:00 p.m. at the
United Congregational Church, 395 High St, Holyoke, Mass. Tickets
are $15. Contact AFSC at 413-584-8975
for info.

Lou's Reviews – Lewis
Spratlan's Pulitzer-winning Life Is a Dream
What
do Amherst College music professor, Lewis Spratlan, and Ludwig van
Beethoven have in common? Both suffered the frustration of being
unable to hear the performance of their masterworks. Beethoven
because he was deaf; Lewis Spratlan because of the unhappy financial
realities of the opera business – despite the fact that his work, Life
Is a Dream, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music!
Lou Wigdor recounts the fascinating story
behind Mr. Spratlan's accomplishment in The
Opera Is a Dream?.
