Storyteller Tom McCabe
will join March 14 Song & Story Swap
Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the March
Pioneer Valley Folklore
Society SONG & STORY SWAP.
Friday, March
14,
7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Black Sheep Café, 79 Main
St., Amherst, Mass.
Guest performer for the March 14 Song & Story Swap
will be acclaimed storyteller, Tom McCabe. Once dubbed "New
England's Pied Piper" by Boston's Channel Five News, Tom has traveled the
world over sharing his tales and theatre pieces. During the past
twenty-five years he is estimated to have entertained more than one
million people, and he holds the unique distinction of being the first
storyteller ever to be invited to perform at The White House.
Tom makes frequent festival and workshop
appearances and has lectured on storytelling and writing at several
colleges in the Northeast. In 1998 he was honored with a Parents' Choice
Award gold seal for his tape Stories Just For You, and in 1999 was
designated a Kennedy Center Millenium Artist. Come hear a master
storyteller work his craft.
The Song & Story Swap is an event where people of all ages gather to share stories and songs that may be
traditional, newly written, or of personal experiences. You can tell,
sing, or lead everyone in singing, play an instrument or request a song or
story. Listeners are welcome, too. Admission is free, with
donations accepted.
The warm-up theme this month is

Pioneer Valley artists
capture 3 Parents' Choice silver awards
Congratulations to
Roger Tincknell,
Motoko Dworkin and
Dennis Caraher for bringing home
silver awards in the Winter 2002 ranking of best audios by
Parents' Choice, a 25-year-old
foundation devoted to promoting children's learning.
Roger Tincknell's
Carnavalito is
described as "Impressive, varied instrumentals and a pleasing, playful and
spirit-soothing mix of multicultural folk songs and chants that beg to be
learned." It marks Roger's second P.C. award, his Earth Rhythms
having been recognized in 1996.
The
Promise of Chrysanthemums
is a collection of Asian folktales, songs and original stories of love and
honor, and is Motoko's first recording. It is augmented by the
gentle spirit of her longtime partner Eshu Bumpus and is recommended for
children age 8 and up.
Dennis Caraher's
Dog Bone Town is a
collection of funny and thoughtful songs ranging from the wacky "The
Elephant Played Electric Guitar" to the more poignant title track about a
boy's loss of his beloved pet dog. Lending their talents to the
production are Jim Henry on guitar, Doug Plavin on percussion, Chris
Haynes on keyboard and Paul Kochanski on bass.
Lou's Reviews – Chasin'
John Coltrane's masterwork, A Love Supreme
This
month Lou Wigdor turns his attention to one of the jazz world's most
revered figures, John Coltrane, and to his ultimate achievement, the 1965
recording A Love Supreme. He starts by introducing Ashley
Kahn's recently published study of the album and proceeds to contemplate
the life, musicianship and spiritual awakening of the sax master.
