Jacqueline Steiner will join June 13 Song & Story Swap

Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the May Pioneer Valley Folklore Society SONG & STORY SWAP.

Jacqueline Steiner -- At the Black Sheep June 13!Friday, June 13, 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Black Sheep Café, 79 Main St., Amherst, Mass.

Guest performer this month will be folksinger Jacqueline SteinerAn accomplished linguist as well as a classically trained vocalist, Jacqueline's repertoire includes songs in nine different languages. However, she is best known for a song she co-wrote with Bess Lomax Hawes for the 1949 Boston mayoral campaign of Walter A. O'Brien. O'Brien approached a local folksong group and requested they compose a song to protest the recent nickel hike in the Boston subway fare. Steiner and Hawes came up with the “MTA Song” about Charlie, “the man who never returned” because he couldn't afford the train exit fee. It was later turned into a hit recording by the Kingston Trio and has become a popular classic at folk singalongs.

During the Vietnam War, Jackie Steiner released an album of original songs entitled No More War, called by Robert Sherman of radio station WQXR, New York, “a revelation: the work of a major artist.” Her more recent CD, Far Afield: Songs of Three Continents, which includes her own rendition of “MTA,” was praised by John Sweeney, critic of The Advocate/Greenwich Times as “folk music for connoisseurs.”
