Singer Judy
Polan will be September 12 Song & Story Swap guest
Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the September
Pioneer Valley Folklore
Society SONG & STORY SWAP.
Friday, September 12,
7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Black Sheep Café, 79 Main
St., Amherst, Mass.
Guest performer at the September 12 Song & Story Swap will be vocalist Judy
Polan. Dubbed "New England's Folk-Glitter Queen", Judy's eclectic repertoire
meets at the intersection of pop, folk, and cabaret music, and she is
particularly known for her warm stage presence and zany sense of humor.
Four-time recipient of the "Favorite
Musician" award in the Valley Advocate Readers' Poll, Judy's 1984
debut recording Judy, Judy, Judy was described by Boston folk DJ
Dick Pleasants as "one of the best first albums I've ever
heard". Her "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud," a song set to Wordsworth's famous
poem, was chosen as the theme
song for a major international arts festival held in the Lakes District of
England in the spring of 1996. For a decade
she was a regular performer at Northampton's First Night, appearing at the
Academy of Music.
Judy has performed infrequently in recent
years, as she has turned to teaching music,
contributing essays to WAMC's Roundtable program, and writing arts
and feature stories for the Jewish Ledger of Western Massachusetts.
Don't miss this unusual opportunity to hear one of the Valley's most
talented and popular folksingers.
The warm-up theme this month is
Hope.
The PVFS Song & Story Swap happens the 2ND FRIDAY of
every month. For information contact Paul Kaplan, (413)-253-9484 or
Jeff Lee, (413)-256-0433 or visit http://www.filbert.com/pvfs.
New Releases from
the Valley
Norman Schell & Youth Well Spent
Norman Schell is best known as founding father of two of New England's
great musical legacies: Worcester's 1960's folk music nucleus, the Y-Not
Coffee House, and seminal Valley folk rock band, Clean Living.
Norman Schell and Youth Well Spent is the pleasing debut recording
of Norman's new group that includes former Clean Living bandmate Rick
Tiven, Dan Hunt, and daughter Gail Hunt.
Underbelly
You may have caught them outside the Pines Theater setting the tone for
the recent Dylan concert, or impersonating the Dixie Chicks at last
month's Transperformance. Freshly shrinkwrapped is the first
disk from the promising new string band,
Underbelly.
Featuring Alicia Jo Rabins, formerly of the Mammals, on fiddle, Pete
Siegel playing a swinging banjo, wiz Michael Daves on guitar, and all
three on vocals, this CD grooves with energy and harmony, in the
Appalachian style.
Perfect Strangers
Amherst's Chris Brashear has been busy on multiple music projects this
year. He has assembled a quintet of bluegrass all-stars to form the
band Perfect
Strangers and record a CD of the same name. Banjo player Bob
Black is a veteran of Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys; Grammy nominee Jody
Stecher plays mandolin; National Flatpicking Champion Peter McGlaughlin is
the group's guitarist; and former David Olney accompanist Forrest Rose
provides bass. Brashear himself is an extraordinary fiddler and
string player, having done stints with Laurie Lewis and the Italian jazz
group Maurizio Geri Swingtet.
Chris Brashear & Peter McLaughlin
Brashear and McLaughlin have also teamed up as a duo and released the
CD Canyoneers
on Copper Creek Records. Sibling-like vocal harmonies, intricate
arrangements, and stunning instrumentals mark this work.
Incidentally, mark your calendars as Chris Brashear will be appearing
as guest artist at the October 10
Song & Story Swap.
Lou's Musical Musings — Bill Visits Bob's
Music commentator Lou Wigdor covers a range of topics
this month. He has interviewed Bill Staines during his Stone Soup
Cafe appearance earlier this year; reviewed new Signature Sounds releases
from Rani Arbo and Louise Taylor; highlighted important new additions to
ECM's world music catalog; and called attention to jazz keyboardist Danilo
Perez's upcoming appearance at UMass.
