The Boys of The Landfill
will be February 13 Song & Story Swap guests
Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the February
Pioneer Valley Folklore
Society SONG & STORY SWAP.
Friday, February 13,
7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Black Sheep Café, 79 Main
St., Amherst, Mass.
Guest performers at the February 13 Song & Story Swap will be the wry
and zany string band, The Boys of the Landfill. The Shutesbury-based
Boys consist of Geoff Rogers on guitar and mandolin, Rob Hayes on fiddle,
and Michael Pattavina on banjo and bass. They are regulars on the Western
New England folk and bluegrass circuits, and their bio boasts that they
combine smoldering instrumental virtuosity with festering harmonies in as
many as two parts.
Please join us on February 13 for a rollicking good time.
The warm-up theme this month is
Leadership.
The PVFS Song & Story Swap happens the 2ND FRIDAY of
every month. For information contact Paul Kaplan, (413)-253-9484 or
Jeff Lee, (413)-256-0433 or visit http://www.filbert.com/pvfs.
New Releases from
the Valley
Mark Erelli - Hillbilly Pilgrim
Though he has moved back east to the Boston area,
Mark Erelli still makes frequent visits to his former musical stomping
ground and last week chose Northampton's Iron Horse as the place to unveil
his latest recording on the Signature Sounds label,
Hillbilly Pilgrim.
It's a colorful collection of western swing and even rockabilly-style
originals, backed up by members of Boston's premier country band, The
Spurs.
Brooks Williams - Live/Solo
"I can't believe I almost thew them all away," says
Guitarist extraordinaire Brooks Williams of the box of live recordings he
had collected over the past several years. Fortunately he was
persuaded to listen through them and compile the best material into a
January release, his eighth, entitled
Live/Solo.
Randal Bays & Dáithí Sproule - Overland
Two stalwarts of the celtic music scene, fiddler
Randal Bays and guitarist Dáithí Sproule, quietly landed in the Valley in
2001 and began teaming up. The duo has now collaborated on their first CD
together called
Overland
and will be celebrating its release with a February 20 concert (not the 21st
as reported in last month's calendar) at the Unitarian Meetinghouse in
Amherst. Visit their web site at
http://home.earthlink.net/~randalbays/bays-sproule.html for more
details.
Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers - Bulletproof Heart
After some notable success as a solo
singer-songwriter, Stephen Kellogg has assembled a backup band called the
Sixers that includes fellow UMass alums, Keith Karlson and Brian Factor.
The band's first disc,
Bulletproof Heart, is scheduled to hit the shelves on February
10, with an inauguration at For the Record in Amherst at noon that day,
and a release celebration planned at the Iron Horse on 2/28.
Amherst International Folk Dancing
Every
Friday night, excepting holidays, international folk dancing is held at
the Bangs Community Center in Amherst from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. The
first Friday of each month features the live music of the band
Panharmonium. The public is welcome, with no experience or
partner required.
For more information call 413-549-6748 or
413-323-6330, or visit

Lou's Reviews — Randy Newman,
Trio Medićval
Lou
Wigdor has added two new reviews to the website this month.
Sailing Away
With Mr. Intimacy examines the anthology covering four-decades of work
from one of the "20th Century’s great art song composers," The Randy
Newman Songbook Volume 1.
In Three
Europeans You Simply Must See (and Hear), Lou predicts that 3
Scandanavian sopranos, Trio Medićval will soon reign as the world's
leading a cappella women's group.
