Tom Neilson, singer-songwriter and activist,
will join July 9 Song & Story Swap
Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the July
Pioneer Valley Folklore
Society SONG & STORY SWAP.
Friday, July
9,
7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Black Sheep Café, 79 Main
St., Amherst, Mass.
Please note that the July event begins at 7:00 p.m.,
a half hour earlier than usual, due to the Black Sheep's shorter summer
hours. There will be no Song & Story Swap held in August as we take a
summer break.
Guest performer at the July 9 Song & Story Swap will be singer, songwriter
and activist Tom Neilson. Known locally as
“the Bard Insurgent,” Tom is a veteran of stage and street theater, with
credentials as a
writer, actor, and director. His music reflects his involvement with
heroin addicts, the poor, human rights, safe energy, and liberation
movements from Nicaragua to Eritrea. His writing tells the stories of
peoples' struggles against oppression and violence.
Tom Neilson has released a total of seven folk recordings, including Swords into Plowshares, which chronicles the 1989
War Tax Refusers Movement in Colrain, Mass., and features “The Ballad of
Randy Kehler.” Earlier this year he brought out his latest CD of topical
material entitled Living On the Maximum Wage. Tom also has a
recording of children's music in the works called Root Beer Makes Me
Burp.
More about Tom Neilson can be found at his web site,
http://www.tomneilsonmusic.com.
The warm-up theme this month is
Freedom.
The PVFS Song & Story Swap happens the 2ND FRIDAY of
every month. For information contact Paul Kaplan, (413)-253-9484 or
Jeff Lee, (413)-256-0433 or visit http://www.filbert.com/pvfs.

The Lady of Northampton
- April Grant This past January, April Grant
enthralled a capacity audience at the Black Sheep with an eclectic
array of ballads, poems and and quirky stories. Several of these
have been captured in her first CD, recorded live at the erstwhile
Fire & Water Cafe. The title track, The Lady of Northampton,
depicts a love quest contested at the Tri-County Fair, and is a
tribute both to April Grant's originality and her memory.

Kora, Africa to America
- Gordon Hellegers In the winter of 2000,
Gordon Hellegers met Boubacar Diebate in Senegal, who began instructing
him on the beautiful West African gourd-harp, called the kora.
He built his own kora and in four short years has made impressive
progress on the instrument, as can be heard on his first recording
KORA: Africa to America.
Gordon is scheduled to be the Song & Story Swap guest artist on
September 10. Order his CD by contacting

Maitri

Living On The Maximum
Wage - Tom Neilson Tom Neilson continues
his tireless rebellion against injustice and establishment misdeeds.
Among the targets of original songs on his 7th CD are corporate greed,
Iraq, biased media reporting, and Trent Lott.

The Maximum Wage, contact him at Box 64, Montague, MA 01302.

Salty Dick's Uncensored
Sailor Songs - Richard Docker, PhD. First
an advisory: the lyrics in this collection of authentic bawdy sailor
songs are extremely salty, and could be found to be downright
offensive. Venereal disease, prostitution and other crude
subjects that a band of men deprived of the company of women might
concoct are represented in their rawest form.
A fast seller at the recent Mystic Sea Music
Festival, the CD will soon be available at
http://www.saltydick.com.
