Donna Hébert
& Max Cohen will join
January 13 Song & Story Swap
Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the January
Pioneer Valley Folklore
Society SONG & STORY SWAP.
Friday, January 13,
7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Black Sheep Café, 79 Main
St., Amherst, Mass.
Please note that this will
be the final Song & Story Swap at the Black Sheep. We will be moving to
the 2nd Sunday of the month at The Harp Irish Pub
beginning in February (see below).
Guest performers will be Donna Hébert & Max Cohen.
The pair has long been know individually for their
instrumental prowess — Donna Hébert as an outstanding fiddle player
and teacher and Max Cohen as a stellar guitarist. Recently they have
begun dazzling audiences as a duo.
Donna
Hébert is a magic fountain of fiddle music. She has appeared in
more than 2000 performances since 1974 and has played first fiddle for a
multitude of bands including contradance specialists Yankee Ingenuity, the
Rude Girls, and the Franco-American group, Chanterelle. A highly regarded
teacher as well, Donna conducts regular In the Groove fiddling
workshops at her Amherst studio and a summer camp devoted to traditional
and world music. She has edited and published the fiddle tunebook, The
Grumbling Old Woman, and has released a solo album entitled Big
Boned Beauty. Donna is currently organizing an Hommage à la famille
Beaudoin CD documenting the tunes and settings of her late
Franco-American fiddling mentor Louis Beaudoin, and is completing work on
a book-CD teaching set called Fiddling Demystified due out in June.
An accomplished veteran of several folk talent contests, guitarist Max
Cohen was a finalist in the 2001 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk
Competition, and won the 1995 Performing Songwriter Competition at
Mansfield's Rose Garden Coffeehouse. His impressive fingerwork and
musicianship may be heard on two independent recordings; the instrumental
Saltwater Color released in 1993, and Places I've gone, People
I've Been (1996) which features Max's vocals and songwriting. He has
also achieved a reputation as a studio musician, contributing guitar
accompaniment to Dar Williams’ The Honesty Room CD. Says Guitar
Player Magazine of Max's playing, “His relaxed but spirited execution
holds true, even at virtuoso speed.”

The warm-up theme this month is
.
The PVFS Song & Story Swap happens the 2ND FRIDAY of
every month. For information contact Paul Kaplan, (413)-253-9484 or

The Song & Story Swap is moving to the Harp
In
1995 owner Nick Seamon graciously offered the side room of the Black Sheep
Café in downtown Amherst as a monthly meeting place for the PVFS Song &
Story Swap which had been struggling to attract participants at other
venues. It was a slow start — not until the format
was changed to feature a guest performer each month did attendance reach a
consistently healthy size. Now, eleven years and more than
100 performers later we are about to bid a fond farewell to the Black
Sheep which will be transforming its performance space to a private
function room.
On February 12 the Song & Story Swaps will be moving to the 2nd Sunday
of each month and will be held at the
Harp Irish Pub, 163 Sunderland Rd. in North Amherst. The Harp has a
rich history of hosting Irish music sessions and other musical
get-togethers and exudes all the atmosphere of the pubs in Ireland and
throughout Europe where gatherings to trade songs and stories are
commonplace.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to Nick Seamon who has supported us at the
Black Sheep Café for so many years, and to Mark "Harpo" Power for
providing us a home at the Harp.
People's Music Network to gather in Amherst
