John Roberts will be guest artist on January 14
Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the Pioneer Valley Folklore Society Song & Story Swap.
Sunday, January 14, 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the The Nacul Center, 592 Main St., Amherst, Mass.
Please note that the Song & Story Swap is now held on the second Sunday of each month at The Nacul Center (see
map).
Guest
performer at the January 14 Song & Story Swap will be balladeer John
Roberts.
John Roberts sings the traditional folksongs of his native Britain in
a manner that is at once authentic and authoritative. He puts these songs
in their contexts, tracing their roots and development through the social
history of the people who made them. And he sings them for enjoyment for
the fun and exuberance of simply "belting out a good song."
John came to the U.S. in the 1960s for a graduate program in psychology
at Cornell and there met fellow Briton Tony Barrand. Joined by a common
heritage and interest in folksongs the two began performing together in
1969, and forged a musical partnership that has lasted more than 35 years,
both as a duo and as members of the Christmas pageant, Nowell Sing We
Clear.
In addition to performing with Tony, John has also continued to develop
his art as a solo performer. His concert venues have ranged from classrooms
and senior citizen centers to pubs and clubs to international folk festivals.
He has been on the staff of folk music camps for the Country Dance &
Song Society as a singer, a dance musician and a teacher of English traditional
dances. John is also a well-known singer of the songs of the sea, shanties
and forebitters, and has been a featured performer at the New Bedford
Whaling Museum, the Mystic Seaport Museum, South Street Seaport in New
York, and the San Francisco Maritime Museum.
John is a master of the concertina, in both English and Anglo configurations.
He is recognized as a fine frailing-style banjo player and plays the hurdy-gurdy
on occasion as well.
John Roberts has recorded over a dozen CDs with Tony Barrand and the
members of Nowell Sing We Clear. He has also recorded with Ye Mariners
All, a sea music trio, and has a solo album in the works. For information
about his recordings, see http://www.goldenhindmusic.com.
The warm-up theme this month is The Tropics.
The PVFS Song & Story Swap happens the 2ND SUNDAY of every month.

WFCR cancels folk programming
Fans
of Susan Forbes Hansen and her Valley
Folk radio program are distraught at the announcement that WFCR is
canceling the show and three others with a folk/world music theme.
Always fresh, always topical and intelligent, Valley Folk has introduced
the area's rich array of folk music talent to legions of listeners and
schooled them in the songs of non-local artists as well. After a run of
25 years, the show is scheduled to bow out with its January 20 airing.
Also cut will be programs Thistle and Shamrock (Celtic), Afropop Worldwide
(African), and Tertulia (Latin).
If you would like to voice your objection to the cuts, send a letter
to General Manager Martin Miller at 88.5FM/WFCR, Hampshire House, University
of Massachusetts, 131 County Circle, Amherst, MA 01003-9257 or email him
at miller@wfcr.org.
