Folksinger Debra Cowan will join April 8 Song & Story Swap

Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the Pioneer Valley Folklore Society Song & Story Swap.

Sunday, April 8 , 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the The Nacul Center, 592 Main St., Amherst, Mass (see map).

Debra Cowan will join the Song & Story Swap at the Nacul Center in Amherst on April 8Guest performer for the April 8 song & story swap will be folk vocalist par excellence Debra Cowan.

Since leaving a public school teaching career in 1997, Debra Cowan has been enjoying success as one of America's foremost interpreters of traditional and contemporary folksongs. Her two solo CDs, Dad's Dinner Pail and The Long Grey Line have enjoyed airplay on folk music radio world-wide and her traditional song "Walloping Window Blind" was published in Sing Out! Magazine. 

Her song renditions have been included in a number of compilations, most recently the Free-Reed Records box set, RT-The Life and Times of Richard Thompson with her version of Thompson's "Has He Got a Friend For Me".  She tours in the United Kingdom annually and travels the USA performing in coffeehouses, museums, libraries and schools.

"Her vocals highlight the beauty of the bare song," writes Angela Page in Sing Out! Magazine, of Debra Cowan's talent.

Putting the "Public" back in Public radio

Petition to strengthen the relation between WFCR and its listenersContinuing our coverage of the reaction to WFCR's abrupt cancellation of Valley Folk and three other popular folk/ethnic music and talk shows earlier this year, we would like to make concerned listeners aware of an online petition that has been launched by the WFCR Democracy Task Force urging people to endorse "strengthening the relation between WFCR and its listeners."

The petition, which currently has close to 100 signatures, is found at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/704207041. Signers can leave detailed comments describing their opinions of WFCR's programming changes.

On the same topic, former Daily Hampshire Gazette editor Ed Shanahan has published a report on his news blog, Downstreet.net, called WFCR at the Crossroads that describes the efforts of the WFCR reform movement.
