Storyteller Kevin O'Hara will join June 10 Song & Story Swap
Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the Pioneer Valley Folklore Society Song & Story Swap.
Sunday, June 10 , 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the The Nacul Center, 592 Main St., Amherst, Mass (see map).
Guest performer for the June 10 song & story swap will be storyteller and author Kevin O'Hara .
A resident of Pittsfield and frequent columnist for the Berkshire Eagle, the colorful O'Hara uses his gift for gab to captivate audiences with his stories.
A prime source for his tales is a sojourn he made more than two decades ago around the country of Ireland in the company of his donkey, Missie. His experiences have also formed the foundation for an acclaimed memoir, Last of the Donkey Pilgrims, which has drawn comparisons to Steinbeck, and has led critics to describe Kevin O'Hara as the "Frank McCourt of the Berkshires."

The warm-up theme this month is Travel.
The PVFS Song & Story Swap happens the 2ND SUNDAY of every month.

Two laws threaten folk music
In recent years the U.S. radio and TV have been plagued by increasing commercialization, consolidation and homogenization, with the result that folk music is becoming increasingly rare in mainstream media. Now legislation threatens two organs that have been important outlets for folk musicians.
In March the U.S. Copyright Royalty Board nearly tripled the rate that internet radio stations are required to pay for broadcasting a song. The new rate far exceeds that paid by satellite radio stations, and also eliminates a chargeback model that had been set up to support very small webcasters. The Internet Equality Act, which aims to correct the imbalance, has been introduced into the U.S. Congress. Learn more at http://www.wicn.org/aboutus/savenetradio.htm.
A proposed piece of Massachusetts legislation known as the Verizon Bill would move cable television franchise negotiation from the local communities to the state and dramatically weaken the requirements for franchises to provide public, educational and government access stations. Municipal leaders, such as Northampton's Clare Higgins, and public access TV stations, such as the board of Amherst Cable TV, are working hard to urge the state legislature not to pass the bill.
