Fiddler Donna Hebert
will join October 11 Song & Story Swap
Please come share in an evening of music and stories at the October
Pioneer Valley Folklore
Society SONG & STORY SWAP.
Friday, October
11,
7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Black Sheep Café, 79 Main
St., Amherst, Mass.
Appearing as guest will be fiddler extraordinaire,
Donna Hébert, accompanied by guitarist and Chanterelle
bandmate, Liza Constable.
Donna has appeared in more than 2000 performances
since 1974 and has played first fiddle for a multitude of bands including
contradance specialists Yankee Ingenuity, the Rude Girls, and the Franco-American
group, Chanterelle. A highly regarded teacher as well, Donna conducts
monthly "In the Groove" fiddling workshops at her Amherst studio
and a summer camp devoted to traditional and world music. She has edited
and published the fiddle tunebook, "The Grumbling Old Woman,"
and has released a solo album entitled "Big Boned Beauty."
Find more about Donna Hébert at her web site, http://www.dhebert.com.
The Song & Story Swap is an event where people of all ages gather to share stories and songs that may be
traditional, newly written, or of personal experiences. You can tell,
sing, or lead everyone in singing, play an instrument or request a song or
story. Listeners are welcome, too. Admission is free, with
donations accepted.
The warm-up theme this month is Mystery.
The PVFS Song & Story Swap happens the 2ND FRIDAY of
every month. For information contact Paul Kaplan, (413)-253-9484 or
Jeff Lee, (413)-256-0433 or visit http://www.filbert.com/pvfs.
John Roberts to make solo appearance in Amherst
John
Roberts is most often recognized as one-half of the balladeering duo, Roberts
and Barrand, or one-quarter of the Christmastime revelers, Nowell
Sing We Clear. He is, however, a talented folksinger and
concertina player in his own right, with an extensive repertoire of
traditional songs, dance ditties and sea shanties. John will be
appearing solo in concert on Saturday, November 2, at the Hitchcock Center
for the Environment, 525 South Pleasant St., Amherst. The show
begins at 7:00 p.m. with tickets available at the door. For more
information call (413)-253-3844.
Wholesale Klezmer Band
celebrates 20th anniversary
During
the fall of 1982, the Smith College Theater Department needed
accompaniment for a production of I. B. Singer's Yentl - The Yeshiva
Boy. And so the Wholesale
Klezmer Band was born.
Joe (Yosl) Kurland, Sherry Mayrent, Brian
Bender, Owen Davidson, Peggy Davis, Michael Suter, Richie Davis, and David
Tasgal will mark the band's twenty years of making Jewish music with
performances at Club Passim in Cambridge on October 12 and the Iron Horse
in Northampton on Nov. 3. at 7:00 p.m. The group will also be
celebrating the release of its 4th CD, Zingen far sholem,
tantsn far freyd—Sing for Peace, Dance for
Joy.
Lou's Reviews –
J osquin
Des Prez
through the voices of The Clerks
This
month Lou Wigdor jumps into the musical time machine and travels back to
the fifteenth century for a close look at the works of one of the
Renaissance period's greatest composers, Josquin Des Prez.
Marking the course of the journey are the wonderful renditions of the
British a capella group, The Clerks.
Don't miss Josquin
Des Prez—Musical Genius through a Distant Mirror.
Incidentally, Lou's
Reviews are being recognized throughout the online world, having
recently been cited at the web sites of keyboardist Danilo
Perez, Dylan's guitarist, Larry
Campbell, and the German folk magazine Folk
World.
